The Distlefink or Good Luck Bird is a Pennsylvania Dutch inspired design showing the
Distlefink (or finch) which was a sign of good luck since if they were in your yard you
would have fewer thistle weeds whose seed is a favorite among finches. The finches
would gobble up the seeds as soon as they were available leaving fewer to become
weeds. It was and still is used in many Pa. Dutch designs as a symbol of good luck. I
use the Good Luck Bird design on bowls, plates and square bowls and is one of my
favorites.
