ALUMIFACT:
Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer is best known for his drawing "The
Praying Hands", sketched in 1508. Legend tells us that Dürer
sketched the crippled, worn hands of his brother who sacrificed his
own artistic aspirations to work the mines for four years to support his
brothers' art training. Hands is a story of loving gratitude and
reminds us of the strength and comfort found in prayer.
Rev. L. Gene Stewart so loved the story and meaning behind the
drawing of the Praying Hands that he engraved a steel die to honor
it. He also believed that wherever a copy of the Praying Hands is
found in a home, peace and happiness can also be found there. It is
with his die that I make each of the Praying Hands pieces.
